"GUARANTEED Pass Your Road Test "First Time"
Hi there smart drivers. Rick with Smart drive Test talking to you today about crash analysis, near misses, and what you need to do in order to avoid being involved in a crash if everything goes sideways.
NEAR MISS CRASH
So near misses! You can see here in the video footage, the driver comes screaming up, merges over two lanes to the left, going way too fast, slams on the brakes, locks the vehicle up and reduces speed a great deal. As the vehicle who's behind the wheel locks it up and reduces speed she/he realizes that the vehicle to the right that they just screamed in front of actually went past them. They go careening across to the right, up on the footpath--the sidewalk--and then down along the sidewalk and actually get the vehicle stopped. Now it actually looks far worse than it is in the video.
But for a matter of fact, the driver did actually avoided a collision in this video footage. Even though it doesn't look like it. It looks like a sort of a melee and that the driver did in fact get involved in a crash, but he or she didn't. There was probably a bit of minor damage to the vehicle from driving up on the sidewalk, but other than that it was a near miss.
STEER OUT OF AN EMERGENCY SITUATION
Now a couple of things that you need to do in terms of having a near-miss. One of the first things to do is not give up! Never give up! When you slam the brakes on, what you're doing is you're looking ahead, you're reassessing this situation, as this driver did, and looking for your out, because it's faster to steer around an emergency situation than it is to try and brake because in this situation there was no way that driver was going to get that vehicle stopped. And he or she realize that and then did evasive steering to actually avoid the collision.
WEAR YOUR SEATBELT TO STAY IN THE SEAT
Two other things that you need to do in terms of avoiding a crash: make sure you wear your seatbelt, because your seatbelts not just to protect you in the event of a collision, but it's also to keep you in the driver's seat. If you're not in the driver's seat, it's pretty hard to operate the controls of the vehicle. So wear your seatbelt to stay in the seat.
DEAD PEDAL
The other thing is that the extra pedal that nobody knows about. They think that it's there to rest their left foot on is the dead pedal. The dead pedal is actually to put your foot on and post off, and push yourself back into the driver's seat and hold yourself there in a more stable position. So that you can operate the primary controls of the vehicle: the steering wheel, the brake, and the throttle, and clutch if you're driving a manual transmission. So the dead pedal is to post off and to hold yourself in the driver's seat so that you can work the controls of the vehicle as this person obviously did and was able to work the controls of the vehicle and miss the collision.
CONCLUSION
So those are some techniques that you can use. First don't give up! Second wear your seatbelt so you stay in the driver's seat. And then third, use that dead pedal to post off of and push yourself back in the seat. That way you have more control while you're trying to avoid a collision when things go sideways.
