The ODR-1 has been something of a secret weapon among guitar players over the years. It’s long been the tonal weapon of choice for Nashville’s top session players - like Tom Bukovac - and in recent years it’s started to break out and become one of the main stompboxes in discussions about transparent overdrives.
I’ve owned the ODR-Mini for a few years now, and love it – it's affordable (around $79/€79), it's built like a tank, it always adds the right amount of sparkle and grit to my tone without changing the character of my guitar and amp too much, and it can also rock with the best of them when you dime the gain too! However, I’ve always wanted to try the ODR-1 BC too. This model features an internal Bass Cut switch to remove any unwanted low end, and Nobels say it should work particularly well with humbucker-equipped guitars.
Time to put that to the test! In this video, I compare the ODR-Mini against its bigger brother – using a loop played on the single coil bridge pickup of my Fender Telecaster – to see how close they sound, and what difference the bass cut makes. Next, I test the ODR-1 BC on its own using a loop played on the bridge humbucker of my Epiphone Les Paul.

My setup was as follows: I ran the pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loops. Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
