Day 67
This one might be a controversial one, but today I’m talking about when we using terms like “disabling” to describe the way we’re feeling. Instead, can we use something like “debilitating” instead that doesn’t place negative value judgment on disability as an identity and culture?
I know I talk a lot about language in this series but it does matter (in addition to your actions)!
Video description/ transcript: Do you want to be a better ally to disable people? If some disabled people have told me that they only identify as disabled when their disabilities are disabling, I'm disabled, but my disabilities aren't disabling. Instead of using an adjective like disabling, could we instead use something else like debilitating? Because when we use disabling, what are we really trying to say about disability?
