For this project we used two $5 bags of concrete, a trowel, a wheel barrel and shovel (for mixing), six round cake pans, vegetable oil, Sharpe marker, scissors, pieces of chicken wire (or hardware cloth), sanding blocks, black acrylic paint, paintbrushes, Pearl Ex powdered pigment, a soft cloth, and water-based concrete sealant. Also, have a sheet of plastic handy to cover the project if it rains.
It took a good 24 hours for the concrete to cure before we were able to pop the stones out of the cake pans and turn the whole rhubarb leaves over. We allowed the stone a few more days to cure before painting and sealing. I have some black concrete pigment on order and next time we will use that to color the concrete. That way, if the edges chip it will still look all black.
The finished project is incredibly unique and classy. Good luck and have fun making your own!
*Please use safety goggles, gloves and a dust mask when mixing concrete as it is caustic and corrosive.
