Dr Hashir Aazh interviews Marta Siepsiak from Faculty of Psychology, University of Warsaw, Poland, about her upcoming presentation at the 6th International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia which is planned for Friday-Saturday 1-2 July 2022 at Birkbeck College, University of London, London, United Kingdom.
Marta Siepsiak is a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Warsaw, Poland, conducting a project titled “Psychological and psychophysiological correlates of misophonia”, financed by the National Science Centre in Poland. Outside of academia she works as a psychologist and music therapist, mainly with children and adolescents. She also completed Applied Behavioural Analysis training and is currently enrolled on a Cognitive -Behavioural Psychotherapy course. Her main research and clinical interests are misophonia and other sensory over-responsivities, psychology of music, anxiety disorders, and abnormal child psychology.
Marta’s talk focuses on her study which showed a lower endurance with higher sensory sensitivity but lack of differences in emotional reactivity and perseverance between misophonia sufferers and controls. Her study seems to suggest that misophonia may be related to the limited ability of the nervous system to process external stimuli, with an increased tendency to detect soft sensory stimuli, and a lower ability to maintain effective performance when overwhelmed.
