It's always in the back of our mind when at port on a cruise holiday. Will the ship wait for us if we are late back?
It's very clear what time you have to be back onboard. Your Waiters remind you the night before, the time is printed in your daily newsletter delivered to your cabin and the time is posted on a board as you get off the ship. However it is easier than you might think to be late back.
The ships time can sometimes be different to local time and throughout your cruise expect to have several time changes. Also some of the ports you visit are a fair distance from the main town. You might need to get a shuttle bus or taxi to and from the ship. Having said that in this video 4,000 people manage to get back on time. Several passengers do not and are late back.
There are many factors that might allow the ship to wait for you longer than you might think. Tide, Pilots -they are need to escort the ship on and out of Port. Also a late departure means an increase in speed to get to the next port on schedule. This uses more fuel an has a financial and environmental cost.
