A total of 10 films received Best Picture Oscar nominations in 2011.  The list includes several dramas and two comedy films - one of them animated.  The films competing for Best Picture at the 83rd Academy Awards are Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit and Winter's Bone.

Several of the Best Picture Oscar nominees were also up for awards in other major categories, most notably The King's Speech, which led the field with a total of 12 nominations.  True Grit had 10 nominations and Inception and The Social Network each garnered eight nominations.

Three of the 10 Best Picture Oscar nominees were winners at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards: The Social Network took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Drama, The Kids Are All Right won Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and Toy Story 3 won the Best Animated Feature Film in 2011.

2011 marked the second year of the expanded Best Picture category.  Previously, only five films were nominated.  The move to widen the list of contenders isn't without precedent: from 1932 to 1943, the category "usually spanned 10 films." 

Notable past winners of the Best Picture Oscar include early classics like "All About Eve," ''Oliver,'' ''It Happened One Night'' and "Marty," to more contemporary films, including ''The Hurt Locker'' (the 2010 Best Picture winner), ''Slumdog Millionaire'' and ''No Country for Old Men.'' In 1998, James Cameron's ''Titanic'' won Best Picture and 10 other Academy Awards, tying the record of 11 wins set by ''Ben-Hur'' back in 1959 and repeated by ''The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'' in 2003.  ''Titanic'' was also the most nominated film in Oscar history, tied with 1950's ''All About Eve'' with 14 total nominations. 

Also, a bit of ''True Grit'' trivia: only three Westerns have ever won the Best Picture Academy Award - most recently ''Unforgiven'' in 1992.  And with regards to Pixar's ''Toy Story 3,'' no animated film has ever won a Best Picture Oscar.
