A missile slammed into an apartment building in the southern Ukrainian port of Mykolaiv on Tuesday (18 October), killing at least one man, a Reuters witness said.
A body lay covered on the floor as emergency workers examined the remains of the apartment building, now destroyed, leaving a massive crater, after the missile hit in the early hours of the morning.
University technician Kseniia Horpynych, 34, said the moment of impact was "impossible to describe."
She told Reuters that her neighbour died in the attack.
Rescue workers pulled a dog out of the rubble of the building and handed it to Horpynych, who cradled it in her arms as she surveyed the destruction.
A nearby flower shop was also completely destroyed in the strike, leaving its glass frontage shattered.
Men and women were seen examing the debris-strewn store to salvage whatever undamaged inventory they could from the devastated interior.
The shop's owner, Oleksandr, told Reuters in Russian that he thought Russian forces "get pleasure from us feeling bad," but said Ukrainians would not retaliate on striking Russian-held cities.
"We won't so that we show we are different from them," he said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused Russia of terrorising and killing civilians with the air attacks, which came a day after drone strikes on Kyiv and other cities killed at least four people.
Moscow denies targeting civilians.
Its defence ministry has said it is carrying out attacks on military targets and energy infrastructure across Ukraine using high-precision weapons.
