Amazon Mechanical Turk is a marketplace for work that requires human intelligence. This means tasks that computers and algorithms can't do. With MTurk, workers have a selection of thousands of tasks to complete whenever it's convenient for them. Each task is called HITS (human intelligence tasks). And you get paid per hits.
But how much money can you actually make by completing these HITS?
The average is said to be only $2 an hour. Only 4% of workers earned more than $7.25 an hour. But others claim that you can make much more. I've found with my experience that $9-$12 an hour is pretty attainable once you have spent about a month working on this platform. Within two to three months, you can begin earning $25+ if you follow these time-tested Mturk strategies.
Examples of jobs that you would do with MTURK are:
Surveys
Write reviews
Take pictures of obscure objects in your environment
Audio transcriptions
Flag photos
Transcribe receipts or data
Voiceovers
I decided the best way to review this platform would be to spend 30 days doing HITs with Amazon Mechanical Turk. Some of the most important MTURK tips I've learned over this month are:
Work at the ideal times - mornings have a lot of good hits, but lunchtime does not
Use a hit scraper - MTurk Suite on google chrome extension is a good one
Join a community - Reddit turksworthturkingnfor is amazing. I also like the Facebook group called Mturk Members.
Some higher-paying HITS require special qualifications, it's a good practice to qualify whenever possible so you can begin completing hiring paying jobs.
Request qualification for higher-paying hits that you don't yet qualify for.
Follow up with MTURK emails that you receive from requesters, occasionally you will receive a high paying job in your inbox!
Some of the biggest pros of Mturk are - You can complete this work from the comfort of your own home. You can stop when u get tired and work at your own pace. Even an extra $20-$40 each week really adds up. And if you do hits that are fun you will want to continue to work and complete more jobs.
Some of the biggest cons of Mturk are - that it is time-consuming, it pays low wages (at least at first), if you're not in the US you only get paid with Amazon Gift Card and not cash. Also if you're not in the US, it's hard to get good hits.
Overall I've been very happy with my experience with this 30-day Mturk challenge. My earnings were better than I expected and I look forward to continuing to Turk as a decent side income.
