This segment focuses on South Africa's energy landscape, comprising two 20-minute presentations. The first, presented by Jesse Burton from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, explored the "Implications of Fossil Fuel Economics & Climate Policy on SA’s Energy System & Economy." This was complemented by Bernard Bekker from the Centre for Renewable & Sustainable Energy Studies at the University of Stellenbosch, who discussed the "Integration of Renewable Sources into the South African Electricity System: Opportunities and Risks." These presentations set the stage for an in-depth panel discussion on several critical topics, including "Unlocking Investment in Grid Infrastructure," "Accelerating Investment in Renewable Energy," "Incentives and Measures for Noncompliance and Managing Risks," and "Managing Employment and Social Impacts of the Energy Transition." Facilitated by Neil Cole from the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), the panel featured both presenters along with Vukile Davidson from the Tax and Financial Sector Policy at the National Treasury, and Shameela Soobramoney from the National Business Initiative. Together, the panelists provided a comprehensive discussion, tackling complex issues around sustainable energy development and policy-making in a transitionary phase for South Africa's energy sector.
