On June 8th, 2021 a pigeon entered a barn owl nest box that had 7 nestling that is streamed live in our YouTube channel (Charter Group Birdcams ציפורים אונליין קבוצת צ'רטר). A this time the barn owl parents roost outside the nest box during the day and returned only at night to feed the young. The pigeon returned on June 9th this time with its mate and laid an egg next to the barn owl nestlings. Since pigeons lay two eggs and start to incubate only after the second egg she slept outside of the barn owl nest box and therefore did not meet the barn owl parents. On June 10th the pigeon decided to sleep inside the box during the night and the encounter with the barn owl parents followed. The male barn owl did not know what to make of the pigeon, whereas, the female, waisted no time and showed the pigeon who the queen of that nest box really is. Enjoy.
The camera was added and maintained by the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (The Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa) and funded by a private donor.
