The Women's Media Center works to make women and girls visible and powerful in the media through strategic programs aimed at transforming the media landscape including media training, media monitoring and activism, original media content, media reports, media programs & initiatives.
During the awards, The Women's Media Center, in partnership with the 4th Estate, released new statistics on gender and media coverage related to the 2012 presidential election. The research showed that for front-page stories in the top 50 print outlets: 71 percent were written by men and only 27 percent by women. On cable and network TV -- political news show guests and experts were 77 percent men and 18 percent women; On "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation" -- guests and experts were 78 percent men and 21 percent women; the gender breakdown for sources discussing abortion and the presidential election in print news: 73 percent men and 20 percent women; and for stories on birth control -- 68 percent were written by men and 27 percent by women.
