In the opening cinematic battle, Erlang and Wukong conspired against the Celestial court and the fight at the prologue was just a pretense. They conspired that the monkey king would die that day, but his Senses would be spread among the Yaoguai Kings, with the essence of Wukong’s Mind being kept in Erlang’s third eye.
The plan was that, eventually, a monkey would rise to take on Wukong’s mantle. Inheriting everything that Wukong was: his Senses, his powers and his armor, but would reject the Golden Headband.
To gain true freedom, Wukong needed to remove the Enchanted Headband which he could have only achieved from his Death and reincarnation. This freedom was promised by the Buddha at the end of Journey to the West, but not truly given.
In the true ending, Erlang waits for the Destined One to defeat him in order to find out whether he was the true reincarnation of the Sun Wukong or not. He then returns Wukong’s memories which will be unlocked after defeating the final boss.
