A chronograph is used to calculate the velocity of your projectile; In my case it is a 175 grain bullet. It's important to know, so that you can plug in data to a ballistic calculator to find a trajectory. I have used many TRADITIONAL chronographs in the past, and they were plagued with annoying quirks like being finicky with light sources, needing to be set up down range, ect.
I found a much better solution (for me) after searching the web. The MagnetoSPEED ballistic chronographs mount directly to the barrel of your firearm, and are unaffected by light, environment, and you can't accidentally shoot (if installed properly).
Check out the MagnetoSPEED v1 and the newer v2 at Magnetospeed.com
Not a sponsored video, although they did send me this unit for T&E.
The Good:
- Easy to use
- As accurate as traditional chronographs
- No need to go downrange to setup (safer)
- Backlit display with multiple mounting options
- Data is written on micoSD™ card and can be viewed in Microsoft excel.
The Bad:
- Initial investment is more than traditional units, although after buying light kits, tripod, and other accessories, it will cost about the same.
- Only used on firearms, sorry paintball and airsofters.
- Need a screwdriver to replace batteries (AA).
