Approved by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the system replaces the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and turning wheels with electrical signals.

Nio claims the system is 2.2 times more reliable than conventional electric power steering. It features dual power supply, communication, hardware, and software redundancies, reducing the chance of failure to just one in 25,368 years. The technology also filters out over 80% of road vibrations and allows for customizable steering feel, enhancing comfort and driving experience.

The ET9's steering column offers up to 6 inches of expansion, providing more driver space compared to traditional systems. This innovation is key to enabling advanced intelligent driving, including Level 3 autonomy and beyond. Nio expects steer-by-wire to become standard in future flagship models.
