Newly-appointed Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors says he wants to confront racism head on. Nathan Fletcher held a panel Wednesday with leaders from communities of color as he declares racism a public health crisis.
Fletcher says addressing racism in San Diego County is long overdue and he believes, now is the time to not only talk about it, but do something about it.
“When I look at those effects, they’re daily. When I look at our children, they’re angry,” said Angela Elliot Santos, tribal leader for the Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

“Everything that happened to us fit all the definitions of genocide. It’s had a lasting effect on my people,” Santos said.
Board Chairman Nathan Fletcher says the Board plans to vote next week to declare racism a public health crisis. He says it’s time to listen to those affected and make substantial changes.
