... The charismatic young Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is Chief Conductor in a partnership that is making critics and audiences sit up and take notice, have recorded an all-Rachmaninov programme for EMI Classics. At its heart is the Third Symphony combined with the Caprice bohémien and the Vocalise. The recording is the first in a series of releases in which this inspired orchestra/conductor team interpret and re-evaluate music by the great Russian masters.
Since Petrenko became Principal Conductor of the RLPO in 2006 and then Chief Conductor in 2009, their partnership has flourished. "There is no doubt that the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra relishes its new lease of life under Vasily Petrenko," The Daily Telegraph wrote, "and [their 2010] Prom attested to the ways in which he can galvanise his forces into playing with stature, intensity and exhilaration." Petrenko has since committed to staying with the orchestra until 2015.
