HOUSE VOTES ON D.C. STATEHOOD: The House will vote today on H.R. 51, a bill that would make Washington, D.C. the 51st state in the United States of America. D.C., with a population of more than 700,000, has a larger population than Vermont and Wyoming, though has just a non-voting representative in the House and no representation in the Senate. The Washington, D.C. Admission Act would grant statehood, and equal representation in Congress, to the District. D.C. residents pay the most federal taxes per capita, and the District paid more federal taxes in 2018 than 21 other states. District residents are also subject to the draft, though have no vote on whether the nation goes to war. The last House vote on D.C. statehood failed in 1993, with a 153-277 vote. It is expected to pass the Democratic House today, but face strong opposition from Republicans in the Senate. President Trump said D.C. will ‘never be a state’ because it would affect Republicans’ power in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader has called it ‘full-bore socialism.’ At a hearing on D.C. statehood, Mayor Muriel Bowser slammed Republican talking points. ‘Yes, it is true that we are more brown and more liberal than some of you,’ she told the committee, ‘but denying statehood would be unfair no matter who was affected.’
