X. Long Zheng, MD, PhD, of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, discusses how to manage thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) during pregnancy.
TTP is a rare hematologic condition that can potentially be life threatening if not managed properly. One of the triggers for a TTP flare-up is stress, such as that observed in pregnancy.
As Dr. Zheng explains, if the TTP is diagnosed prior to pregnancy, then the TTP can be managed and it is not a contraindication for pregnancy. However, the stress of pregnancy can sometimes lead to a person first becoming aware they have TTP.
Recently, Dr Zheng and colleagues wrote guidelines for managing people with TTP, including pregnant women. A free pdf copy of those best practices can be obtained at [ Ссылка ]
