Four-month ceasefire is being shot to pieces
UN peacekeepers closed Sarajevo airport on Saturday (8/4) after
one of their aid planes was riddled with bullets while landing.
The aircraft was ordered back into the air before ground crew had
a chance to unload it, and was hit again as it took off. There
were no reports of casualties. The UN did not say who fired at the
plane, but tension has been rising around the airport between
peacekeepers and Serb forces. The four-month ceasefire in Bosnia,
not due to expire until May 1, has crumbled steadily since
mid-March. The number of incidents in Sarajevo has increased
sharpy and fighting between Muslims and Serbs in central and
north-eastern Bosnia has escalated. In western Bosnia, civilians
were reported to be fleeing the village of Vrnograc as troops
loyal to the rebel Muslim leader Fikret Abdic advanced, extending
their area of control within the Bihac enclave. In central Bosnia,
the army is reinforcing its positions on the snow-capped Vlasic
Plateau, a strategically important area recently recaptured from
the Serbs. Across the border, in Croatia, rebel Serbs mounted a
counter attack, trying to dislodge Bosnian Croat forces who have
taken Mount Dinara. The rebel Serbs fear that the Croats are
attempting to take high points from which they can launch
artillery attacks on Knin, the capital of Krajina.
