“There are more court cases ongoing at the moment. We hope that they will also conclude that Russia was responsible and we are waiting for accountability from the side of Russia or the Russian government. We need them to say 'okay, it was us' and we need them to explain what happened. It is not normal to shoot down a civilian airliner. Was it a mistake? Could be. STORYLINE:
The families of the victims of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 on Sunday held a silent protest in The Hague.
The passengers and crew, who were killed in the downing in 2014, came from more than a dozen countries, although nearly 200 were Dutch citizens.
At the event in The Hague, 298 chairs were laid out to represent those who were onboard the flight.
That event was held outside the Russian Embassy.
Earlier in the year, an international team of investigators said it found “strong indications” that Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the supply of heavy anti-aircraft weapons to Ukrainian separatists who shot down MH17 with a Russian missile.
Russia has always denied any involvement in the downing of the flight over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, and refused to cooperate with the investigation.
