Part of this footage was filmed above Hakahaka in a place called Archers Gully (source Dion Grey)
The footage features some of the Gill Constructions Co of Blenheim NZ putting a road through to Port Underwood.
Dick Gill of Gill Construction is featured shaking hands with many of the men. He was accompanied by his grandson Peter Gill (Don aka Rangi and Naomi's only son)
This note is from Emma Bishop who is the daughter of John Guard,
"I have watched the Port Underwood road-making video. I have also had my Dad, John Guard take a look. We can positively identify Albert Guard, Edward Guard & John Guard - as a 12yr old boy!
At 0.39 - Albert Guard is on the far left of the screenshot, approx 55yrs.
At 0.55 Albert Guard is in the centre of the shot holding his hat.
At 0.39 - Edward is in the middle wearing the grey beanie with a pom-pom. Approx 19yrs. He is talking to Erwin Ham (Gill's bulldozer driver)
At 0.55 he’s on the RHS with a beanie on.
At 0.39 - John is 2nd from the right with the brown beanie with pom-pom. Approx 12yrs
So it was a delight for Dad to see himself and he was able to reminisce about the day, those many years ago. We’re using 1957.
At 0.39 -Dad also thinks it’s either Reg or Laurie Daken on the far right, the man with glasses.

Further feedback was given to me regarding this clip.....
Christine Thompson reported: "There is a "Historical Grave" signpost near "The Tongue", on Tumbledown Bay Road, Port Underwood". Christine has offered to check, next time she is passing if this is the same grave."
Richard Gill (another of Dick Gill's grandchildren) reported: "I think much of this footage is back above Oyster as the Tongue is in the background. As for the people I am pretty sure that is the Guard family (which has been confirmed as above). We visited them when the road first went in. Went over with old Frank Martin in his model A ford. I don’t remember that trip but I sure remember that model A."
Anthony (Tubby) Smith added his memories:
"This is the road to Port Underwood.
* Honney Brydon on the International Harvester TD-18 tractor.
* Erwin Ham was driving the Allis Chalmers HD16 bulldozer.
They are heading into Port Underwood. The road to Robin Hood Bay was a lot later.
You can also see Gill's blasting rock in this little video which was adapted to be just like the Gill grandchildren used to love to watch it. [ Ссылка ]
