Charyn Canyon is located around 200 km east of Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan. The view here really resembles the Grand Canyon in Arizona. While much smaller, the Charyn Canyon is very impressive. Two parts can be enjoyed by visitors: the Valley of Castles and the Yellow Canyon. There is a hiking trail through the Valley of Castles, which is around 2.5 km one way. At the end of the trail, you can enjoy the pristine water of the Charyn River. The current is too strong though, so no swimming. If you do not fancy walking, there is a decrepit minibus that can take you. As for the Yellow Canyon, you can only see it from the lookout, but the view from the top is really magnificent!
