Rectangle silicone mold
Why to use a silicone mold for resin casting. Well if you want to batch out a lot of the same size products, it’s a time saver. Plus its reusable.
Lets talk about some benefits of silicone molds/forms
You using a silicone mold for resin casting has advantages such as flexibility ease of the molding and the ability to capture intricate details. Silicone molds are durable resistance to heat and can be reused multiple times. They provide a smooth surface finish on a resin product and are suitable for various shapes and sizes making them popular and crafts art and manufacturing applications.
Pros re-usable, time savings, no leaks , higher temp rating
Cons, kinda stuck in the same shape in ways. Cost- can be expensive to buy
Lets make one.
Size 12 by 24 by 2 inch shore 30a silicone
Also show the shore 20a for the cribbage board
Talk about the durability of the silicone. Like 20 vs 30
Build size
24x12x2
So to make it and a form we have to have a displacement. What I mean by that is a positive and a negative. With this also , your baiscly building a box without a lid out of silicone.
Positive 4 - ½ inch pices of melamine cut to 24 by 12, screwed together , and the sides taped off. Melamine is porus on the sides. We don’t want the silicone form to show that.
For the sides, we will cut 2 long sides 25 inches long. We will use the same ½ stock just making sides for our form. I would say you should try to make them at least 2 and ¾ inch.
For your end barriers , same height, just make it 14 inches. The extra ½ inch on each side is to glue them together
For your base , just cut a rectangle out of the melamine. I would do like 16 by 30 ish its just a flat board your going to be gluing your sides too, and screwing your shape of 12 by 24 to.
Lets figure out the volume of silicone needed
How I want this to come out is ½ thick sides and base. 2 inches tall
So lets do the math 25 x 13 = 325
325 x 0.5= 162.5
To convert cubic inches to ounces is 0.554 x162.5 = 90.025
So the base is 90 ounces of silicone.
Now lets do the sides.
2 inches tall , 25 long by 13 wide
25 x 2 = 50
13x 2= 26
50 x 2 =100 for both sides * this is for the 2 inch height
26 x 2 =52 for both ends *this is for the 2 inch height
152 x 0.5 = 76
76 x 0.554 =42.1 oz
So 42.1 + 90.0 = 132.00 ish
130 will do it. We do have overlap in the corners. So subtract about 2 oz for the corners.
You could mix up all of it if you want heck 128 or a gallon would get it too base just may be a little bit thinner.
Ok so make sure you tape your sides of the positive. Glue your sides down with hot glue. I use a half in shim in between the form to make sure it’s the same size. On taping , try to use a poly based tape. Tuck tape works great. Trim if you need to
