So I don't turn loads of pens, and therefore don't consider myself more than just a bit of a beginner by comparison.

I know there are loads of people out there who make a good living at craft shows etc, and although I'm sure many people who agree with me here, I'm sure there are just as many who do not...
Here's my logic....
I see loads of "big name" youtube makers, putting out turning videos like "beginners guide to pen turning" or "best project for new pen turner" etc etc, and they are nearly always sponsored by companies selling beginner sets; with mandrels, blanks, and a few slimline kits.. and seriously, a really crappy cheap quality pen kit which has two tubes to line up, uses 3/4 of a "standard" 3/4"x3/4"x6" blank, and nearly always looks like a sausage wearing a belt...
No offence, my first one looked like that too!!
Personally I find the Single tube pens far easier to line up, shape nicely, there's half as much work, you can get two pens from a blanks, and they are only about £5-6 you might even have the ONE right size drill bit in your shop. and if you use "between centre" bushings, not only do you get a nicer, more accurate finish, they're cheaper thanks a mandrel, and all you need is a dead/drive centre to run them on.....
seriously people, do your self a favour, get 4 or 5 decent single tube pen kits, and the between centre bushes, and it'll cost you less than even a crappy quality mandrel! don't waste your money, use it wisely, and have more fun doing it!
