한일, 내일 도쿄서 군사정보협정 실무협의…4년5개월만에 재개
Now over in Tokyo tomorrow... it will be officials from South Korea and Japan holding working-level talks... on an intelligence sharing deal. That's according to Seoul's defense ministry today.
Last week the two sides agreed to resume negotiations over the proposed General Security of Military Information Agreement... aimed at better countering North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
Under the accord, South Korea will be provided with related intelligence collected by Japan’s reconnaissance satellites and Japan will receive that from South Korea's Aegis destroyers.
The U.S. welcomed the decision, saying the potential deal between its two Asian allies would bolster cooperation amid growing threats posed by North Korea.
Formal negotiations on the bilateral agreement began in 2012 but came to a halt due to protests from the Korean public.
Seoul currently holds military information sharing pacts with 32 other countries.
