There is a legendary incident in the history of the Cossacks. It took place in 1676. Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman empire, commander of one of the most feared armies in the world, demanded the immediate surrender of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. Their reply became the stuff of legend.
