Yoshikazu Ugawa, MD, Fukushima Medical University, Fukushima, Japan, discusses the process of diagnosing and treating myoclonus. First, the anatomical origin is investigated through electrophysiology before the etiological origin is found through biochemistry and imaging. The etiological origin will determine treatment. If the myoclonus is caused by cancer, epilepsy or medication, then they should be addressed first. If an etiological origin cannot be found, then treatment should focus on symptomatic relief. The drug commonly used for myoclonus treatment is clonazepam. This interview was recorded during an online conference call with The Video Journal of Neurology (VJNeurology).
