How much does van life in Baja cost? We recently finished six weeks in Baja and are breaking down our budget and expenses so you know what to expect.
The first expenses come before you even cross the border. To legally be in Mexico as a tourist, you need to get your tourist card or FMM. When driving into Mexico, you can get this when you cross the border for about $40 per person. You’ll also need Mexican vehicle insurance which cost us $831 for the year. We also stocked up on groceries before crossing the border. In hindsight, this was largely unnecessary as larger Mexican cities have most of what we wanted anyway.
Speaking of groceries, food was certainly our biggest expense. Yet, it’s still a lot cheaper than north of the border. Eating at restaurants tends to be a little more expensive than cooking for yourself, but not by much. All in all, it cost us about $1100 to stay fed in Baja, including some serious splurging at restaurants.
Of course, our van needs gas to stay on the road. This can be a major expense. Gas prices are up everywhere, but they are stable in Mexico at about $4.30 per gallon. Your fuel budget will vary depending on what and how you’re driving. For us, our gas bill to get from Tijuana to Los Cabos was $426.93.
We’ve also been camping a lot. Baja has some incredible campgrounds that can cost as low as $5 per night, but never more than $30. We spent ten nights at various campgrounds for a grand total of $200.
But we’re not just driving through Baja. We’re enjoying ourselves too. We bought some gear for DIY adventures and went on a couple of tours for the total cost of $515.
Also, set some money aside for unexpected expenses. For us, $250 to have the van towed when it was stuck in the rising tide was well worth it. You’ll find, like so many other things, that any repair work or emergency expenses are still much less in Mexico than they would be in America, but are still something to budget for.
In the end, six weeks in Baja cost us about $3000 USD. So, what do you think? Did we do well with our budget or did we overspend? Let us know in the comments below!
