In July 1943, with Sicily in Allied hands, attention turned to mainland Italy. In the forefront of the attack at Salerno were two USAAF groups operating a rather unusual aircraft. The North American A-36 had been conceived as a fighter for the RAF but hastily converted to a specialist dive bomber. Generally regarded today as an insignificant offshoot of the P-51 Mustang - if it is regarded at all - the A-36 squadrons were in fact pivotal to Allied success at Salerno. Offering a mix of range, performance and pin-point accuracy that no other aircraft could match, the A-36 was vital for suppression of Axis defences, escorting long-range bombing raids and supporting troops as they established the beachhead.
