Devolo Powerline Adaptor Review - Fast networking over the existing electrical wiring in your home!
Do you struggle to get a decent wireless signal throughout your home for your internet connection? Does your connection drop out at the most inconvenient times for no apparent reason? Are you looking for a better solution than to have networking cables snaking all over the place through your house? Would you like to get an internet connection at full speed wherever you are in your home and even be able to stream 3D movies to every room?
Well my name's Bob and until quite recently I had that exact problem in my home. Let me tell you about it briefly, and also how I was able to solve my problem.
For some crazy reason we've always had a problem with wireless in our home. Not just the wireless broadband but the mobile phone reception is rubbish too. We've just got a 3 bed terrace house in London, not a mansion. One of our upstairs rooms is set up as an office, where we've got our Netgear Draft N wireless router. But, we've always had trouble with the wireless, even in the very next room. Because she used the wireless my wife often complained about the internet dropping out. My son also had difficulty doing his homework because he would lose his internet connection from time to time and lose his homework! He was not happy!
So I looked around for an alternative. People suggested wireless "range extenders" for instance, but I really didn't want more wireless in our house, and with wireless there's always a bit of a security risk to my mind. And I didn't want the disruption of a full cabling job. What I DID want was something that would work right out of the box.
Then a friend showed me his Devolo adaptor. It was an inconspicuous little device plugged into a power socket, which allowed him to network over the mains power network into any room in his house. I was very impressed. It was so elegant and simple. And attractive too!
With these small devices called Powerline adapters, you route your Internet connection around your home using your existing electrical power lines, you know, the ones already installed in your house.
So after researching different makes and models I chose to buy the Devolo adaptors as well, and also to get the fastest they had -- 500 Mbps, after all, why would you get anything less when we're all going to be accessing more and more video and data over the internet?
I got the triple pack Devolo dLAN 500 Mbps AV mini from Amazon. The mini doesn't have the "pass-through" power socket, so I saved a bit of money as I didn't need that but you can get that too if you want. I think the units are very attractive, they're white, and they sit unobtrusively up against the power point.
And it was so easy to get going. I just plugged them in, hooked up, and we had our home network running! That was it. It really works. It's fast and works seamlessly with the electrical system. And, it required no technical skill to install or setup. Now we can get fast internet anywhere in our house, or garden, wherever there's a power point. I have to say though that the Ethernet cables they provided were a bit stingy, just 2m, so I had to buy longer ones.
You'll need two adaptors to get started, but you can add more as you go. For example, we will use one for my wife's laptop where she works, another one in our kitchen so we can access the internet there whenever we want, and then another for internet TV. Also my son's Xbox 360 has an internet connection to plug in.
I've downloaded the "Devolo Cockpit" management system, but I haven't really needed that. It shows you the speeds you are achieving at each adaptor. At the moment I'm getting 274 Mbps at one adaptor -- plenty fast enough to stream video.

They look good, they plug and play, and they certainly work for me.
