Extraordinary sighting of a northern right whale dolphin off the coast of Dana Point today!
This is only our second recorded sighting in over 20 years of a northern right whale dolphin. Our previous sighting was in May 2022.
This northern right whale dolphin was sighted swimming with sea lions and a pod of common dolphins. It went over to our catamaran to bow ride for over 10 minutes. The dolphin even turned on its side to look at passengers on board! Once in a while a few common dolphins would swim over to check out the new visitor. Witnessing northern right whale dolphins mixing with common dolphins pushed this sighting into extraordinary.
Northern right whale dolphins (Lissodelphis borealis) prefer deep, colder waters in the North Pacific Ocean and are usually found in areas over the continental shelf.
Streamlined, with black coloring on top and white underneath, northern right whale dolphins are unique in that they are the only species of dolphin in the North Pacific Ocean without a dorsal fin. They are 6 to 10 feet long and weigh up to 250 pounds. Northern right whale dolphins can swim at an average of 16 miles per hour and short bursts of 22 miles per hour.
