Former President Donald Trump mocked Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell for endorsing him – and signaled his hope to repay that endorsement by “getting rid” of the Kentucky Republican.
Trump was speaking at a rally in North Carolina on Sunday when he made the comments about McConnell, relating them to Vice President Kamala Harris and the inflation seen under President Joe Biden’s administration. McConnell and Trump’s relationship famously collapsed following the January 6th Capitol riot. During the GOP primary, the senate leader called on the Republican party move beyond Trump.
However, after the former president consolidated control of the primary and became the GOP’s nominee, McConnell ceased criticizing Trump. Back in March, McConnell endorsed Trump for the presidency even though the two men have not spoken since 2020 when McConnell declared Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 election.
During his rally Sunday, Trump called the Minority Leader a “disgrace” and blamed him for helping Democrats.
“They got trillions and trillions of dollars. Hopefully we get rid of Mitch McConnell pretty soon, because he helped them,” said Trump.
