Once we got the core out of the can we were able to unravel the packing and the steel wool. I would highly recommend wearing gloves for this process. If you're going to save your packing and your steel wool, be very careful that you don't damage either of the components more than necessary to get them out. I didn't buy new packing so I re-used the packing. If I ever do this again I would definitely replace it with new materials. After you get it out and you make the new cut you'll need to cut the materials to properly fit the new length of your pipe.
