Greek favourite traditional dessert, one of the most delicious desserts you will ever try! Juicy, aromatic, infused with orange syrup, you can serve it cold or hot. It is perfect with a cup of coffee or on its own, served with a scoop of your favourite ice cream.
For the syrup
• 400g caster sugar
• 400g water
• 100g orange juice
• orange zest from 2 oranges, cut into thin strips
• 1 cinnamon stick
For the orange pie
• 200g Greek yogurt
• 100g orange juice
• 100g vegetable oil
• 150g caster sugar
• 10g vanilla sugar
• 4 medium eggs
• grated orange zest from 2 oranges
• 20g baking powder
• 1 pinch of salt
• 450g filo pastry
• oil, to grease the pan
For serving
• ice cream
Method
1. Place filo pastry sheet into a baking tray 25x32cm, bake at 100-110C for 20min. Remove from the oven and allow to cool down.
For the syrup
2. Peel the orange zest from 2 oranges and cut thin strips. Squeeze the juice of 2 oranges .
3. Put the sugar, water, orange juice, zest, cinnamon stick into a saucepan and transfer to a high heat.
4. Bring to a boil to let the sugar melt. Remove from the heat and allow to cool down.
For the orange pie
1. Preheat the oven to 160 C.
2. Put the yogurt, orange juice in a bowl and mix well with a whisk.
3. Add the oil, sugar, vanilla, eggs, orange zest, baking powder, salt and mix well.
4. Break the dried filo pastry sheets into small pieces.
5. Add gradually filo pastry pieces into the mixture and mix until well combines. Grease a 26x26 cm baking tray and transfer the mixture into the baking tray.
6. Bake for 40 min at 160C. Remove from the oven, pierce the cake with a skewer. Whilst the cake is still hot, pour over the cold syrup.
7. Leave it until all the syrup has been absorbed (15min).
8. Serve cold or warm with ice cream of your choice.
