Peanut allergies are one of the most common food allergies. And if it affects you or your child, you mentioned that your child does have a peanut allergy, it can make life a little more complicated.
But, with the right training and education there are ways around it. If your child is allergic to peanuts, chances are she's allergic to other tree nuts and you want to stay away from anything that has peanuts or tree nuts in it. This is where it gets complicated because you don't always know the types of things that peanuts are in. For example, it can be in chili because some companies grind up peanuts to add to the texture of the chili. So always read labels. In the United States, all foods have to have on the label if they contain peanuts or not. It gets a little more complicated if you're going out to eat or sending your child to school or to parties where people don't know that your child has a peanut allergy. So make sure that everyone knows; waiters, waitresses, friends, family members that your child has a peanut allergy so that they can help your child stay away from peanuts as well.
Now, in addition to keeping your daughter away from peanuts, one of the most important things you can do is carry around an epinephrine pen or some people call it an epi-pen. Keep it with you, in your purse, not just in the glove compartment of your car. Because seconds count, if this kind of reaction happens. Sometimes a person's throat closes up or it can affect the cardiovascular system and make a person stop breathing. So, this epinephrine pen is something that can save your daughter's life if she had this type of reaction.
