Research by Tegemeo, Institute of Agricultural Policy and development, suggests that Kenya's dairy sub-sector in its current state, already contributes 14 percent of agricultural GDP, a figure that is larger than the tea sub-sector. However, because of the old, outdated and expensive production costs, Kenya cannot reap as much as it should from milk production, despite being the second highest milk producer in Sub Saharan Africa, after South Africa.
