How believers BECOME righteous in Christ, how they become the righteousness OF GOD. Paul is just saying in more detail exactly what Jesus said here:

If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Mark 8:34-38.

He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and he who loves son or daughter more than me is NOT WORTHY of me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after me is NOT WORTHY of me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for my sake will find it. Matthew 10:38-39

If anyone comes to me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he CANNOT be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me CANNOT be my disciple.... none of you can be my disciple who does not FORSAKE ALL THAT HE HAS. Luke 14:26-33

If anyone wishes to come after me, he must DENY HIMSELF, and TAKE UP HIS CROSS and FOLLOW ME. For whoever wants to save their life WILL LOSE IT, but whoever LOSES THEIR LIFE for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16:24-26.

My sheep HEAR MY VOICE, and I KNOW THEM, and THEY FOLLOW ME and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand. John 10:27-28. See John 11:25-26. Compare above with Matthew 7:21-23. Also compare above with Romans 8:33-37.
