Back in January 2020, komoot ambassador Lael Wilcox headed to Colombia to pioneer a bikepacking route through the Chingaza National Park. Riding through the high paramo – a high elevation cloud forest that provides 70% of Bogota’s water, Lael and the squad got to know the landscape, the locals, and the challenges of riding in a steep mountainous region! We chatted with her about the route, the ride, and the experience of Colombia itself.
What they covered:
- The local cycling scene in Colombia
- How they put together the route with help from locals
- The cultural experience of riding in Colombia...including the riding snacks
- The riding conditions – from stiff inclines to cloud forest mists
- Camping in Colombia and accommodation en-route
- Best bike for the route
- The process of documenting the ride
- The people they met and the experiences they had en-route
- Lael’s tips for using komoot
