1. Silicone Lego mini-fig cake form (if you interested in how to bake in the silicon minifig shape you can look at my video "How to make a silicon minifig shape" step by step.
2. 1 box of premixed cake of your choice (I use chocolate cake mix)
3. Butter icing (Use if you like chocolate frosting from supermarket, as I did)
4. 1 box ready-to roll icing "Queen"
5. Black liquid food colour
6. White gel food coloring "WILTON"
7. Blue and red edible food pans (or use same color liquid food colors) for the little patterns on the top of Darth Vader
8. Extra 3 small pieces of ready baked sponge or other cake which need cut for add extra for the helmet of Darth Vader (brought from the supermarket)
9. brushes to apply colors
10. small amount of silver dust for the silver patterns on the arms
11. toothpicks
Butter Icing:
250 grams (9 oz) unsalted butter, at room temperature, chopped
3 cups pure icing sugar, sifted
1-2 tablespoons milk
Using an electric mixer, beat butter until white and creamy. Add icing sugar, 1/2 cup at a time and mix well. Add enough milk to make the icing spreadable. Cover the icing surface with plastic wrap until required.
Method
Once your cake is ready and cooled, levelly top, flip over on your plate or working board, trim the sides. Cut the shapes (use supermarket sponge or any cake) for the helmet and stick this pieces to the head of Darth Vader with butter icing (or chocolate frosting), then apply butter icing (or chocolate frosting) all over your cake. Then take ready-to-roll icing from the packet , remove the foil and sprinkle powdered icing sugar and start kneading, until its softened . Roll the icing, often turning and sprinkling with powder icing sugar to prevent sticking, once its bigger in size than your cake, carefully transfer it on top of the cake.
Start from the top work carefully (dusting your hands with powder icing sugar) shape your cake shape helmet by a little pinching around eyes and make it look like the helmet of Darth Vader, shape arms, legs, shape whole body. Then outline with a toothpick the cape of Darth Vader trim to this shape with sharp knife, after that trim away all extras around the cake. Then with a toothpick carefully work out your patterns. When finished, first, color most of cake with liquid black food coloring first, leave uncolored only patterns on top of Darth Vader. From left over trimmings from ready-to-roll icing roll two balls for the eye circuits place them while black color still wet (if it already dry then stick them with black writing icing to the helmet) color them also with black liquid food coloring. To make a grey color mix black liquid food coloring with white gel food coloring, outline patterns on the top of Darth Vader and use also for lighten up parts of the helmet, pants, arms. Apply silver dust for wrists of Darth Vader, color with blue and red edible food pen (or use same color liquid food color) patterns on the top. If you like to add red lifesaver use left over trimmings from ready-to-roll icing color it red (use red gel food coloring "Wilton" or AmeriColor") roll it shape, you can use also brought from supermarket red ready-to-roll icing and make from it.
