This video is for authors who plan to self-publish their books.
So, I first want to address Amazon Seller Central, because the majority of self-publishing authors probably aren’t familiar with it. (FIRST CLUE TO NOT USE IT FOR YOUR BOOKS!!)
Small businesses, and even larger businesses, want their products on Amazon.com. It’s only in the past few years that Amazon has become a producer (of Amazon Essentials products) of goods. From the start Amazon was the retailer, you buy things there and stores can list their products for sale. Either that business is warehousing items and is handling all the shipping or the business is paying a warehousing fee to Amazon so it can be shipped through Amazon.
So think of Fisher Price brand boys for kids, and ATR brand microphones. The brand is listing its product on Amazon. And they can optimize their listings with images and product details.
Small businesses can do this too. They list their products, low inventory alerts, etc. from Amazon Seller Central.
Now, what is Amazon KDP?
Kindle Direct Publishing. A way for self-publishers to list their eBook, and then eventually their print books on Amazon.com. Upload to Amazon KDP, the book is on Amazon.com Direct 1-to-1 relationship.
So why would a self-publishing author consider using Amazon Seller Central?
I have no flipping idea! Probably they listened to some side hustle podcast about selling things on Amazon and they were like “Oh, Seller Central” and did no other research. Yes, books are things, but Amazon has a unique and specialized platform just for books. Use that one.
Well, why? I’m a special unicorn author, so I feel I should use Seller Central.
Okay, cool. The first time you have any issues on your product page for your book and reach out to Seller Central about your product, your book, you are going to get the run around of the century being sent to Author Central and then to KDP, but oh, you didn’t use KDP, now back to Seller Central.
There are extremely limited circumstances where a one-person self-publishing operation should consider Seller Central.
You have a board book or another print book that cannot be produced via the print-on-demand options on offer AND you have a large demand for the books. So you’re getting an offset run and are selling enough books to make the headache work it.
You have been doing print on demand but now need to have larger distribution and savings from an offset run and set up more advanced options.
That’s it.
If you are looking to self-publish an eBook or a print book on Amazon, use Amazon KDP.
Not Seller Central.
