Lactic Acid (an alpha hydroxy acid) is one of my favorite ingredients to gently exfoliate the skin. It helps to create a natural glow by dissolving dead skin cells that hold on to pigment and reduces discoloration. It also has properties that help moisturize the skin and improve the skin barrier. It’s quite the multi-tasker.
However I recommend using a lactic acid exfoliant formulated for the skin.
1️⃣ An actual exfoliant will be more effective as you can purchase the best lactic acid % for your skin. General rule of thumb: start low (~5%)
and go slow (1-2x weekly ) when introducing any chemical exfoliant.
2️⃣ Yogurt contains a very small amount of lactic acid and while some yogurt face masks pose little potential for harm directly putting food products (and their additives) on the skin can cause a skin reaction that can lead to more irritation which leads to inflammation and further hyperpigmentation, acne or worse.
Here are a few of my favorite super affordable lactic acid products :
@theordinary lactic acid $8
@theinkeylist lactic acid $12.99
