Independent MP Kate Chaney says while Australians care about broken promises, they recognise when circumstances change, policy needs to change as well.
Ms Chaney’s remarks come after Sky News revealed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is poised to break an election promise by reducing his stage three tax cuts for higher income earners.
Mr Albanese is expected to announce the reform during his National Press Club speech on Thursday, following an urgent caucus meeting on Wednesday to address the cost of living crisis.
“There is some recognition ... that cost of living relief is necessary,” Ms Chaney told Sky News Australia.
“The reality is these tax cuts – whether they go through in their original form, or they’re reshaped – are likely to be inflationary.
“So, I suppose the challenge the government has is to try to get the maximum cost of living benefit that’s possible.”
