Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director David Allen MW (Master of Wine), tastes and reviews the 2014 vintage of the highly renowned Chateau Calon Segur, one of the leading properties in Saint-Estephe.
Calon-Segur was rated a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves and is unique in the Médoc as its vineyards are in a single plot surrounded by tall stone walls.
The wine is a Bordeaux blend but it is always predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. In some years the Cabernet Sauvignon proportion can be as high as 90 percent.
The name, Calon-Segur, was given to the estate in the 18th Century by Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Segur, who also owned Chateaux Latour, Lafite and Margaux. The Marquis chose to add his name to this chateau alongside the word Calon (the name of the small boats that traded on the Gironde). As well as changing the name of the estate he also placed a heart on the label, famously saying: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart belongs to Calon."
