Welcome to our Spotlight Sessions, a series dedicated to conversations with change-makers and people that have made an impact on the community of people with disabilities.
In this episode, we had the opportunity to speak with James R. Langevin, the US representative for Rhode Island's second congressional district and the first quadriplegic to serve in Congress. James R. Langevin’s journey began on the law enforcement career path, but took a sudden turn when a bullet went through his neck severing his spinal cord making him a C 5/6 quadriplegic. With the rallying of support from his friends and family, he developed new dreams and goals, and eventually was elected for public office as a delegate to our constitutional convention. Since, James R. Langevin has been involved in many life changing legislations, such as, the Respite Care Act in 2006, the National Cyber Director Act in 2021, and the Affordable Care Act.
James R. Langevin shared his thoughts on the following topics:
1. What a day in the life of a US congressman looks like.
2. The importance of the three pieces of legislation that he was involved in.
3. Why it is so important that representatives incorporate people with disabilities into their legislation.
4. Breaking down barriers within the US house of representatives to full service and inclusion for people with disabilities.
5. Why Rhode Island businesses should be catering to workers and people with disabilities.
