The thumb leaves its position on the neck of the instrument and comes above the strings with the other fingers when shifting to thumb position. The thumb plays the second harmonic in basic thumb position. In more advanced thumb position playing the hand shifts and the thumb must press strings to the fingerboard. Raise the elbow to allow the hand to be framed so the fingers are curved and above the strings. The line from the elbow to wrist to the base joint of the pinkie should be straight.
