The Cyril in question is Cyril Knowles who played left back for Tottenham Hotspur around that time. He sadly died of a brain tumour in 1991, aged just 47.
I found this funny when it came out as my Dad’s name was Cyril. To be honest, I was young at the time and didn’t see past that, and, not being a football fan, it was only years later that I realised that this was actually a football song! Obviously I have since listened to the words and I now know that Spurs are also known as the Cockerels, hence the ‘Cockerel Chorus’.
