The elimination of Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) and People's Protection Units (YPG) fighters in Syria is “only a matter of time”, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Monday.
Fidan’s comments came after he met Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, with whom he discussed the Islamic State (IS) threat in Syria in the aftermath of the ousting of Bashar al-Assad by Syrian rebels, including the presence of US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) whom the YPG are linked to.
The PKK has been fighting against Turkish forces for Kurdish self-rule inside Turkey since the 1980s and is classified as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US, the EU and certain other countries. Turkey views the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) as an extension of the PKK.
