(14 Jun 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday, following US President Donald Trump's historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
Pompeo is on a briefing tour to update top officials in Korea, Japan, and China about the summit.
He first stopped by Seoul to debrief top Korean and Japanese diplomats, working to paper over any semblance of disagreement over President Donald Trump's concession to Kim Jong Un that the US will halt military exercises with South Korea.
Pompeo insisted the president hadn't backed down from his firm line on North Korea's nukes.
Pompeo then flew to Beijing to meet Xi, whose country, China, is believed to wield considerable influence with North Korea as its chief ally and economic lifeline.
Both Pompeo and Xi praised the "personal" friendship between Trump and Xi, as well as continuous exchanges between the US and China.
During Pompeo's visit to Korea, there were persistent questions about whether Trump had given away too much in return for too little among Korean and Japanese officials.
