The Naples Cathedral (Duomo di Napoli) or Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) is a Roman Catholic cathedral, the main church of Naples, Campania, southern Italy. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Naples and is also known as the Cathedral of Saint Januarius (Cattedrale di San Gennaro) named after the city's patron saint. The construction of the cathedral begun during the reign of the King Charles I of Anjou, was continued by his successor, Charles II (1285-1309) and was completed in the early 14th century under Robert of Anjou. The Angevin gothic style cathedral was built on the foundations of two palaeo-Christian basilicas, whose traces can still be seen nowadays.
